Autumn in the Bay

I love living in SF, but the fact is, this time of year in the Bay is just lackluster in the way of fall foliage for a girl from Michigan. After 2-3 weeks of misplaced but welcome summer temperatures in Sept/Oct, you wake up one morning to find it’s become full-blown winter overnight and we’ve entirely skipped over the changing of the leaves and the crisp, yet still sunny days. As soon as daylight savings time (why??) strikes, the trees become bare and the wind turns brutal—not to mention sunset is 5:01pm. So rude.

So in SF we have to make our own version of fall happen. For some people, undoubtedly that comes in the form of endless PSLs or by curling up under a gravity blanket with an enthralling book, but for me, it means integrating the idea of fall into my daily outfit choice by bringing in those autumn tones, prints and textures. Some of my go-to’s:

  • Colors: red, brown, tan, cream, gold

  • Textures: suede, leather (or their vegan counterparts), cashmere, silk

  • Warmth: layer up! I’ve posted about layered jackets before, and this is a practical way to stay warm while integrating a couple different fall tones and textures into your look

This particular look was driven by my sadness that Planet Blue is closing all their brick & mortar stores (sigh), so I chose my favorite dress from there in honor of this news. For all you PB fans, thankfully they’re keeping their online store open, so all is not lost.

I infused a bit of a western vibe into this outfit with the inclusion of the red cowboy-style booties and the suede fringed jacket. I like how those pieces look alongside the modern silhouette of the dress (cutout triangle, smocked waist and balloon sleeves) to ensure it doesn’t edge into costumey territory. The pony hair bag sits somewhere right in the middle, with an ever-so-slight western nod.

Outfit details: Blue Life dress via Planet Blue (too old to link); Jeffrey Campbell boots (Poshmark, Mercari); vintage jacket; vintage bag.
